How To Apply For A Pell Grant Via The Fafsa

The federal pell grant has been instrumental in getting students money for school for decades. This grant focuses on helping low income students get the money the need to further their education in a college or technical training setting. Students who fit the simple and easy to understand requirements are eligible to receive up to $5,500 for the 2010-2011 school year.

Applying for the pell grant is done by filling out the Free Application for Student Financial Aid, or the FASFA. The FAFSA is a form that needs to be filled out by any one wishing to get funding to further their education or return to school. The FASFA can determine what financial help a student can get from a Pell Grant. Filling this form out can also get students information regarding Stafford and Plus loans, as well as work study programs at the college they will be attending.

The Department of Education oversees the Pell Grant program, and they start accepting FASFA applications starting January 1st of each year. Typically, these forms are turned in during the fall before the requested schooling would begin. Turning these forms into the Department of Education in a timely manner can help to ensure that a student receives the largest possible amount of funding they are eligible for.

The FASFA focuses solely on the student’s financial needs and the projected cost of the school that the student wishes to attend. The expected family contribution is specifically looked at when determining the amount each student shall be awarded. This number looks at what a family could contribute towards a student’s education. Many things go into this number; yearly income, family size, and other assets.

The FASFA is easy to fill out. It is available online, through school counselors and at most colleges financial aid offices. Filling the FASFA out online allows students to save information throughout the years. This makes it much easier to update the information from year to year, which is required by the Department of Education.
